Today the Olympics begins in full with the opening ceremonies! It will air here in just a few minutes, and I am super excited!

Here is a recent photo of the countdown clock:

This year’s games have inspired another set of Guinea Pig Olympics pictures! There are 12, which are featured in a 2013 calander that is available for purchase from Maverick Arts Club. The art is so realistic because real guineas were used as models for the art.

Here are pictures, not in calendar order:

Here is a video compilation put together by Guinea Pigs Today:

I love these images, they make me laugh because I know that my guinea pigs would have nothing to do with these games!

I feel it would be much more like this:

This wonderful drawing is called Guinea Pig Race, by Risachantag on Deviantart. You can buy prints of this cute (and more realistic) picture here.

Guinea Pig Costume

I have had dreams since I was much younger of having a guinea pig costume. Well, my mom could not sew and I knew no one who would be willing to help me design one once I was old enough to start really caring about having a cool costume for Halloween costume contests. I still do not have such skills and have only ever purchased costumes from stores.

Today I found this video:

I do not know what “The Magic Cuy” is, because the actual commerical is not in english,  but I think the costume is amazing!

Here are some of the commercials I believe the costume was made for (not in English):

I would love to be able to have such skills in at least crafting the lower half of a guinea pig costume. I would not make a mechanical head because that would be impossibly difficult for me and I think it would be overly expensive for a Halloween costume. The company that I believe made the costume has created a lot of other animal and creature costumes for different commercial use.

Guinea Pig Problems

The first guinea pig I had never injured herself in all the time I had her. Now, after having my 2 guinea pigs for 7 months they both injured themselves over the course of a couple days. We had two trips to the vet last week, and will have a follow up trip this week.

Fizz broke her back middle toenail on her left foot and had to have it removed at the vets. I have no idea how she did it, but I wish I did so I could prevent her from doing it again. Here you can see she only has two out of three claws on her back foot.

Here she is recovering happily:

Cola got a large piece of hay stuck in her eye and scratched her cornea. We have to put medicated gel in her eye three times a day. You can see her partially closed eye on the left side.

She is now doing much better and the eye is almost fully open. Here she is begging for food.

There are wonderful forums online if you ever need to know if a medical problem with a guinea pig is an emergency or requires vet care. It is always better to take your pet to a vet’s office should you suspect there is something wrong with them.

Please see Guinea Lynx for wonderful health information.

My New Guinea Pigs!

Hello everyone, sorry for the lack of posts due to the busy holiday season! But I would like to introduce you all to my two new guinea pigs!

This is Cola:

This is Fizz:

I have had them now for a little over three weeks and they are starting to warm up very well to people and their new environment.

I have a nice two level cage made out of metal grids and coroplast plastic bins. For bedding I use fleece with layers of towels under it. Here is a picture:

I ordered this cage on ebay, but you can easily make your own especially if you can make use of a lot more space in your home so that you do not need to have two levels. To find out more information on C and C cages, check out guinepigcages.com. This site provides lots of information about materials, how to get them, pictures of cages, and good how to tips.

I have a pen to put them in for floor time, complete with plenty of tubes to run through:

Hope that everyone enjoys the last day of 2010!

They also have links to many other great sites that sell guinea pig themed and related items at their Madmarket.

If you are thinking about guinea pig ownership, please take a look at their care guide.

I love this site for what it can teach you about responsible pet ownership – always be an informed pet owner. A guinea pig, as with any other pet, should only be obtained after careful consideration of your life style and what the animal needs to be happy and healthy.

If you love or are interested in guinea pigs I encourage you to take a look at the site to see what they have to offer at cavymadness.com!
