Happy Earth Day!

I hope that you are all having a good Earth Day!

Opening in movie theatres today is Disney’s African Cats.

The movie tells the story of two families of big cats, the cheetah family and the lion family. The cubs are so cute! Proceeds from the first week will go towards saving the Savanna.  To see clips and read more, see Disneynature African Cats.

I saw the movie earlier today, and I highly recommend it. Disney manages to tell a good story about the trials and triumphs of these cats, while still leaving the film appropriate for younger viewers. I do warn you though, there are hunting scenes in which the big cats catch their prey. They are fairly artful without blood, but there is a scene of the lions eating in which they have blood on their mouths. I am totally fine with this truth of nature, but some of the parents with little kids at the movie were a bit upset – so I figured I would put that information out there.

Winter the Dolphin

Winter the dolphin is an inspirational animal. She lost her tail after being caught in a crab trap and she survived despite all the adversity of such a catastrophic injury to a marine mammal. She had a will to survive and learned to swim again with the help of a prosthetic tail.

Winter lives at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. She has a book and now a movie coming in September, in which she stars as herself.

You can read her full story and see more pictures at the mail online.

To learn more about the movie or to buy merchandise (including a DS game) visit seewinter.com and winterstail.com.

Here is a video of her happily swimming with her new tail:

Winnie the Pooh Duplos

Did you play with Duplo blocks when you were little? Duplos are the younger child version of Legos, designed for ages 1 and a half to 5 years, and they have teamed up with Disney to offer sets with Pooh and friends.

These would make excellent Easter gifts for younger children. If I had little kids I would probably buy these for them because I love Pooh and building toys.

Winnie the Pooh’s Picnic: $9.99

Winnie the Pooh’s House: $29.99

Features Pooh, Eeyore, and Piglet

Tigger’s Expedition: $19.99

And if you like the idea of Duplo, but not Pooh, the brand also offers other cute sets like these:

Baby Zoo

World People Set

Toy Story 3 – Jessie’s Round Up

Animal Puppets

I posted an entry a long time ago about the play War Horse, which features amazing, life sized and life-like horse puppets. This makers of the puppets, Handspring Puppet Company, featured their abilities to make life like puppets at the TED conference this year. I have included an explanation of TED below the content of this story.

War Horse horse puppets

Here is the video from TED featuring and explaining their awesome animal puppets, it is however 18 minutes long:

I would suggest that you watch the whole thing because how they make and move the puppets is truly amazing, but if you do not have that kind of time below are two shorter videos showing what the company can do.

A quicker demonstration of the horse puppet (only 2:48):

What is TED? It is a nonprofit organization which conducts an annual conference where the ideas currently at work and those of the future can be presented to investors and the public. These ideas cover all areas, from art to technology and beyond, and are meant to try and make the world a better place. The presentations are all available on their website TED.com. My husband introduced me to the TED conference this year after going to watch some of the presentations from the live webstream of the conference. I decided to post this because something that I was interested in the past actually came up at TED, and I encourage you to check out their website for ideas

Through the Years: Pooh Bear at Disney

I found an awesome article on Jim Hill Media which shows pictures of the costumes of Disney Characters at the parks used throughout the years. I suggest taking a look at his whole article at jimhillmedia.com, but here I can show you the progression for Winnie the Pooh.

Here is a photo of Pooh and Eyore from Disneyland in 1966:

Pooh is kind of scary, and I am not sure I understand the purpose of the honey pot on his head. Eyore is okay, I think.

Pooh’s costume received a slight redesign, but did not really change until the 1980s:

This costume is better, but now the eyes and face seem really off to me. I do appreciate the lack of head wear.

Pooh received another redesign and this is what he looks like now in the parks:

Now he looks a lot like the most recent incarnations of the character in the animated tv shows and movies.

Take a look at the full article here to see other characters’ progressions.

Lap Giraffes

Have you seen this Direct TV commercial?

The end features a miniature lap giraffe. I think the giraffe is adorable! Did you ever wonder if you could get your very own miniature giraffe?

Well, now a mini giraffe can be yours from petitelapgiraffe.com!

Here are pictures of their giraffes:

Here is what the website states about Petite Lap Giraffes:

“Petite Lap Giraffes are very funny animal that require special care. They need lots of love. Hugs and kisses every day. Otherwise they make tears. If you have children, petite lap giraffes no problem. If child is loud, the giraffe will be shy, but does not bite. PLG’s are very clean. With training they will go in box like cats. Allergies never a problem.”

New Baby Polar Bears

There are two new polar bear cubs at the Nuremberg Zoo in Germany to fill the place of Knut.

Cubs Gregor and Aleut were born in December, but have only just made their first appearance to zoo visitors. These cubs will go a long way to fill the void after Knut’s unexpected death. I wish the best to these two new polar bear ambassadors, and I hope that they are able to contribute to the future of these beautiful animals.

To read more about the cubs and see more pictures see the Daily Mail.
