Flemish Giant Rabbits

Flemish Giant Rabbits are a domesticated breed of rabbit that are famous for their immense size.

If these bunnies are handled regularly they will be tolerant of human interaction. However, they must be handled carefully due to their weight and size. They also have larger space and food requirements than smaller breeds of rabbits.

You can read more about the basics of the breed at wikipedia.

The 101st Senator

Today I found out about Dakota, the Bichon Frisee owned by Senator Kent Conrad – the chairmen of the Senate Budget Committee. With all of the budget talks going on in Washington Dakota has been around for the proceedings to keep his master company. Given his ongoing presence and cute nature Dakota has been given the honorary title of 101st Senator.

Winnie the Pooh or Harry Potter?

Two very different movies open today: Winnie the Pooh and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Will you be seeing either or both?

Disney knows they are not going to win in box office numbers or theater attendence given the phenomena that is Harry Potter. Take a look at this video from Disney Animation:

They also posted this video:

A very cute response as only Disney can look on this in regard to how overshadowed their movie is as it comes out the same day as the last Harry Potter movie.

I will be going to see Winnie the Pooh this weekend. Will I be seeing Harry Potter? Probably…but maybe not this weekend.

I am of the Harry Potter generation, I grew up reading the books as they came out and even waited in line for midnight releases of the books. Interestingly, or maybe not, the movies failed to capture me as a fan. I have seen all the previous movies up to this point, and even went to some midnight releases.  After I read the final book it did not fulfull my expectations after reading, and waiting for, the series over so many years. I enjoyed the series because of the delay in books and the expectations/desire that created, but disliked the series resolution because I had higher expectations due to all the build up. Oh well, that is how it goes – I know many who feel very differently about Harry Potter.

Hope you guys enjoy this crazy movie weekend!

Wag.com

Amazon owns a new website that sells only pet supplies: Wag.com.

This is a new site in the line of other websites which amazon owns featuring an incredible one word url (read expensive to obtain) that they then turn into a site which sells all kinds of products related to that url. Wag.com’s sister sites include diapers.com (baby products) and soap.com (health and beauty products).

The site is visually appealing and has separate sections to feature different products for different types of pets including dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, small animals, and fish. You can click on the titles to get to each section or on the picture related to the type of animal products you want. There is also a special boutique area for buying items to pamper your dog or cat.

The website currently features a list of 5 reasons you should shop from the site which include:

1.) A  large selection of products.

2.) Free shipping for orders over $49. —  If you already shop online from Petco or Petsmart, keep in the mind the shipping deal on this site is the same as what Petco currently offers while Petsmart offers free shipping on certain items only. But if those are the items you are after then it might be the better website choice.

3.) Fast delivery — The free shipping can be 1 or 2 days, which is very good for shipping in general and if you need what you are ordering soon.

4. ) A shared shopping cart with wag.com sister sites —  I do not understand the full implications of a “shared” shopping cart. If it means that you could get items from the three sites together to create an order of $50 or more and get free shipping then this might actually make shopping the sites together a good deal instead of going out to get such items at various stores.

5.) The ease of being able to shop online without leaving your home. — I do like this option sometimes, especially if I am really busy and can then order online and have what I need delivered without wasting time to run errands.

My verdict on the site:

This site has a lot of potential and will probably be very popular as more people learn about its existence. The site reminds me a lot of the petsmart and petco websites, but with items that you could only find at one or the other in a single location plus items which neither carry. They offer a lot of dog and cat items, even with eco friendly options.

However, I did not find what I usually use for my guinea pigs. I use Oxbow brand food and hay and the site does not have a good representation of the company’s products. They only sell the hay in two sizes – too small an amount for my two guinea pigs (15 oz) and in an extremely large amount I would not know what to do with (25 pounds for $45). I usually buy 40 oz bags for a little over $10 at my local pet store, so buying multiple small bags  here and paying shipping does not make sense. They offer the oxbow guinea pig food only for baby guinea pigs and do not currently carry the adult formula, and  the baby GP food is also $3 more expensive than where I currently buy my food.

For now I won’t be shopping at wag.com, but that does not mean that you cannot find what you are looking for, or use on a regular basis, for good prices.

Guinea Pig Problems

The first guinea pig I had never injured herself in all the time I had her. Now, after having my 2 guinea pigs for 7 months they both injured themselves over the course of a couple days. We had two trips to the vet last week, and will have a follow up trip this week.

Fizz broke her back middle toenail on her left foot and had to have it removed at the vets. I have no idea how she did it, but I wish I did so I could prevent her from doing it again. Here you can see she only has two out of three claws on her back foot.

Here she is recovering happily:

Cola got a large piece of hay stuck in her eye and scratched her cornea. We have to put medicated gel in her eye three times a day. You can see her partially closed eye on the left side.

She is now doing much better and the eye is almost fully open. Here she is begging for food.

There are wonderful forums online if you ever need to know if a medical problem with a guinea pig is an emergency or requires vet care. It is always better to take your pet to a vet’s office should you suspect there is something wrong with them.

Please see Guinea Lynx for wonderful health information.

Angry Birds Plushies

Build-A-Bear Workshop is now selling stuffed versions of the Angry Birds.

The game Angry Birds is a very popular game on smart phones and is now playable on Google Chrome as well. To play in the Chrome browser, visit here.

The plush versions are all 5 inches tall and I believe each of them makes a noise. They cost $12 a piece, and are available at your local Build-A-Bear or online.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Mr. Popper’s Penguins opened this past weekend. I went to see it on Sunday and would highly recommend this film. I enjoyed it, but I have also never read the book and therefore cannot say how good a job it does of portraying that story. I did think it had a lot of heart. And while having a couple parts I thought were a bit gross (dealing with penguin poop), I think that the good qualities of the film outweigh those moments. Plus, the CG penguins are simply adorable!
