IKEA Monkey

Did you keep up with the news story about that pet monkey Darwin who was lost at an IKEA? His case is now in court to decide if he will be returned to his owner.

Here is the now famous “IKEA Monkey”

(nydailynews)

If you did not see the original story, a year old rhesus macaque named Darwin was found wearing a diaper and faux shearling coat in a Toronto IKEA parking lot last December. He escaped his crate in owner Yasmin Nakhuda’s car while she was shopping in the store. It is illegal to keep monkeys as pets in the city so once caught by Toronto animal services Darwin was taken to Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary. Yasmin was charged with animal abuse but that charge has been dropped.

Yasmin wants Darwin back and is currently in a legal battle. She says she was tricked into surrendering the animal once coming forward as Darwin’s lost owner, did not know it was illegal to keep him, and that she is willing to move where it is legal to own such pets if the court allows his return.

She has a facebook page dedicated to her cause called Darling Darwin Monkey, which features pictures, videos, and a lot of debate amongst people for and against her cause.

The contents of the Facebook page depict her as a loving owner whom Darwin bonded with. But many animal activists believe it is cruel to own primates because of their needs and intelligence. Some can become aggressive and dangerous as they reach maturity. Macaques are known to carry diseases like Hepatitis B and Herpes which can be transferred to humans.

What do you guys think? Would it be better for a monkey born in captivity and bonded to a human to be given back to that person, or should the animal go to a more natural environment in an animal sanctuary?

I will update when the court makes a decision later this month.

Here are a couple pictures from Darwin’s Facebook Page:

Photoshopped

People can create amazing pictures on Photoshop by combining different animal pictures together. The article I found on Petapixel describes these creations as Chimeras. A Chimera originally referred to the mythological Greek animal combination of a lion, goat and snake (usually portrayed as a lion with goat head on its back and a snake tail). Now the term Chimera can be used to refer to any imaginary creature created using two or more animal pictures.

Here is an example of the original Chimera:

All of these photos are examples are from Petapixel. Click the link to see more photos and read a short tutorial about the process if you want to create your own Chimeras.

I really want to start looking for appropriately colored and posed animal photos to try and create my own examples!

Harbor Seal Pup

This little 3 day old Harbor Seal pup was rescued on Long Island and taken to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. It is not known if the baby was abandoned or if crowds at the beach kept the mom away. Harbor Seals are protected and you cannot approach, handle or feed them.

Just look how cute the pup is!

Star Trek

Have you seen the new Star Trek movie yet? I have!

I know such movies have little to do with this blog, but when I saw the following picture I could not resist posting it:

A guinea pig dressed in a Star Trek uniform (complete with little skirt)! If only I had sowing skills, or guinea pigs that tolerated clothes for pictures.

I did enjoy Star Trek Into Darkness. I have never seen the old movies, and hear it borrows some plot points, but it is worth watching if you are a fan.

Kentucky Derby

The 139th Kentucky Derby is tomorrow, May 4th, at Churchill Downs! 20 horses are allowed in the race, with 21 having applied and qualified this year.

However, only 19 horses will race in the Derby tomorrow. Black Onyx was scratched from the race with a bone chip this morning, and while the horse Fear the Kitten was wait listed to race in the place of a scratched opponent the decision came after the 9 am deadline for adding the additional horse.

Who are some of the top contending horses this year?

1. Orb

(AP Photo/Garry Jones)

Orb pulled out of all the horses as the favorite, being on a four race winning streak. He was purchased for only $50,000 and has already won close to $1 million. Orb drew the 16th post out of 20 horses, which places him in the overflow starting gate but is actually a good position to start from. Four horses have won from the 16th post, the most recent being Animal Kingdom two years ago. You can read more about Orb at ESPN.

2. Verrazano

(USA Today)

Verrazano is in a close second for favorite for the race tomorrow, and has a very good chance of winning. Verrazano is 4 for 4, unbeaten in his racing career. He will break from post 14, very close to Orb but from the actual (rather than auxiliary) starting gate. He never ran as a 2 year old, and if he won would only be the second winner of the Derby ever to claim that after Apollo in 1882. Will he have the stamina to win without the benefits of a few more races and more months of training that most of the other contenders have had?

3. Overanalyze

(SB Nation)

Overanalyze is owned by Mike Repole who’s company created Vitamin Water (sold to Coke-a-Cola in 2007). This horse has shown good versatility in running style for the length of this race, but has been sort of inconsistent in previous races. But with the wins he has pulled off recently he might just have what it takes to win the Derby.

4. Goldencents

2013-04-29T163542Z_01_LOU10_RTRIDSP_3_HORSERACING-KENTUCKY

(washington post)

Goldencents is a horse to watch not only for his ability to win, but for what that win would mean for his owner and trainer. Goldencents is owned by Rick Pitino, the University of Louisville basketball coach who just won the national championship. A win in the Derby coupled with that win would be unprecedented. The trainer, Doug O’Neill won the Derby last year with horse I’ll Have Another. To have this horse win the Derby for a second year would more than prove O’Neill’s horse skills.

About that ability to win? Goldencents has shown as much skill as the other major contenders and has only been getting faster as he runs longer races. He has a fast start, but has also shown an ability to pick up speed later in the race. It is unknown whether he can last such a distance as this race, but we won’t know until he tries.

5. Revolutionary

Revolutionary-Odds-to-Win-Kentucky-Derby-050313L

Revolutionary has won three consecutive races, and his odds are fairly good for this race. The most outstanding factor for this horse? Why his jockey, of course. Calvin Borel rides Revolutionary, and he has won the Kentucky Derby three times! Borel is one of the most decorated jockeys in the history of horse racing, and much of that success has only happened in the past 6 years aboard a few different horses. Given Borel’s record for handling horses, Revolutionary has a really good chance given his and his jockey’s skills. Will that be enough?

Honorable Mention:

Mylute

2013 Kentucky Derby - Preview

(SB Nation)

While Mylute has not won a graded stakes race, he managed to qualify for the Derby. His full potential is unknown and he might just have the sprinting speed to win. He also has a female jockey, Rosie Napravnik, who is the only female jockey running  this year and a win would be the first for a female jockey ever at the Derby.

Watch the Derby tomorrow from 4 to 7 pm on NBC and I will post the results when available.

Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff is a large and fluffy breed of dog which originates from Central Asia. Adult male dogs have been found weighing up to 280 pounds, but the average weight for a fully grown adult is 180 pounds.

Here is a puppy:

RrASC52

This ancient breed has been, and is still today, used as a herding or guard dog. There are said to be two types of Tibetan Mastiff – the monastery (Tsang-khyi) which is larger and heavier boned and the nomad (Do-khyi) which has less face wrinkles and is a bit smaller. Both types are born in the same litters, and distinctions seem to be more among what breeders desire from the dogs for temperament and work or show potential.

The dogs come in varying coat colors. The coat sheds once a year, but regular brushing is required for proper maintenance. These dogs have rather independent temperaments, that as always can vary across individual dogs. Highly intelligent and energetic, these dogs excel at herding and guarding but may not be easy to train. The protective instinct is natural to the breed and they will act protectively (maybe aggressively) over their family and their property. This dog is not the perfect choice for all families due to size, maintenance, and exercise requirements.

A Tibetan Mastiff has also earned the title of world’s most expensive dog when a red coated puppy sold in China for 10 million yuan, or over $1.5 million US dollars. In the US prices are bit more reasonable for puppies, but you can still expect to pay an average of around $800 – $1000 for a well bred puppy.

Here is the million dollar puppy, named Big Splash:
