Save the Monopoly Dog Game Piece!

Hasbro, the company behind the Monopoly game, has decided it is time to change one of the iconic game pieces for the basic versions of Monopoly. These pieces have been around for years, and they are allowing fans to make the decision on which piece goes and what new one is added.

To vote, head on over to Facebook: Save Your Token

The pieces at stake for removal: the car, thimble, boot, scottie dog, battleship, hat, iron, and wheelbarrow. You can select each piece to see the “reason” for removal and why it should stay.

New pieces up for vote:

The new options are: robot, diamond ring, cat, helicopter, and guitar.

I voted for the dog piece, as it has always been my favorite:

I encourage you to vote to save your favorite piece as well! As of writing this article the dog and car are in the lead of votes while the iron and wheelbarrow are lowest. Just in case your favorite piece ends up being cut, I hear a “Golden Token” Monopoly set featuring all of the original pieces will be available from Target some time in February.

Amazing Dog Grooming

I found some photos of very elaborate, and maybe crazy, doggie hair styles. The puppy cut can make many dogs look really cute but it is amazing what some shaving, styling, additions, and color can do to make a dog look completely different! What do you think of these dogs?

1. The Muppets

muppets

I love the use of color, differnet fur lengths, and the creative use of the dog’s tail!

2. A Giraffe

The paint is amazing, and I really like how the tips of the paws are black to simulate hooves.

3. A Horse

Horse

Wow! This dog had to sacrifice a lot of fur to make this look, but I love the mane and tail! The hooves and saddle are a wonderful touch.

4. Peacock

Very colorful, and I really hope that the peacock tail is a piece that the dog is just standing in front of and not actually attached to its back.

5. Tiger

Tiger

Such a cute look!

6. Lion and Zebra

The mane is fabulous, I just feel bad for the saved tail!

7. Another horse

This puppy has nice additions to its fur for the feathers on the helmet, mane and tail, and its puppy bridal.

8. Dinosaur (or maybe a dragon?)

30_2_1354906711

I am not sure what kind of reptile this is supposed to be, but the use of color and fur style are both simple and amazing.

9. Tropical dog

I love the macaw and frog designs on this dog!

1o. Bison

A cut of differing lengths really gives this dog the appearance of a shaggy bison.

11. Chicken

I love all the subtle details on this one. The little wings on the dog’s side, the front legs being colored yellow with feet above the puffs on its legs representing the nest/hay of the barnyard, the comb, tail feathers, and tiny nest with chicks really make this an elaborate and well thought out design.

12. T-rex

30_2_1354906380

This one is easier to tell that it is a dinosaur! I love the teeth on it, eyes, and the creative use of the rest of the dog in the design.

SOPA/PIPA

Today many of the larger websites in the US have gone dark today to bring attention to legislation currently going through congress that would hurt the internet if passed as is. I encourage you today to look at and understand SOPA and PIPA, and if you can sign a petition or contact your representatives so that this does not pass as is.

Articles with links for further info: Mashable talks about why this legislation is dangerous, CNN Money discusses the legislation and why it matters, and a  New York Times article about the event today.

Here is a petition from Google: End Piracy, Not Liberty

I support the effort to protect intellectual property online and to make laws better in that regard. However, I cannot support these bills as they are with the ability to take down a website without having to prove that there is actually a problem. And doing it in a way that the website would not be able to recover or really even fight for its own reputation.

Here is what Wikipedia says about the legislation:

“SOPA and PIPA would put the burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small sites won’t have sufficient resources to defend themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn’t being infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won’t show up in major search engines. SOPA and PIPA would build a framework for future restrictions and suppression.

In a world in which politicians regulate the Internet based on the influence of big money, Wikipedia — and sites like it — cannot survive.

Congress says it’s trying to protect the rights of copyright owners, but the “cure” that SOPA and PIPA represent is worse than the disease. SOPA and PIPA are not the answer: they would fatally damage the free and open Internet.”

Some websites that are taking part in the blackout: Google (take a look at the censor bar over their logo)

Wikipedia has a blackout page on the english language version of their site (see it here)

wordpress.com has censor bars all over the main page stories, Moveon.org, Craigslist, Reddit, Boing Boing, Firefox browser creator Mozilla, and the Cheezburger network are all participating today.

Again, here is one of the easiest ways to voice your opinion – from Google: End Piracy, Not Liberty

$10,000 Dog

My dogs have eaten a lot of things they should not have, but nothing ever worth thousands of dollars:

In Albany, GA, a dog ate $10,000 worth of diamonds!

The Pomeranian named Honey Bun goes with his owner to work at John Ross jewelers. When the store’s co-owner got up to meet a customer  he left a chair open in a location allowing Honey access to a desk where 4 packs of loose diamonds were laying open. Honey only left one pouch untouched.

With the diamonds missing it was apparent that the dog must have eaten them and was immediately taken for x-rays. The check up cannot show carbon, but it did show a couple spots that were likely the diamonds. A day later, after nature took its course, the two one carat diamonds were recovered.

I am not sure that I would want diamonds that had taken such a strange journey!

Designer Dogs: The Doodles

Designer dogs or hybrid dogs, crossing two pure bred dogs, are incredibly popular these days. There are many different crosses which now have almost standard names of their own and you can easily find puppies of these varieties. However, exact names do vary as do the resulting puppies appearances and temperaments.

Pure bred dogs have a written standard against which individual dogs are judged and usually only those that match well are bred on to ensure the breed remains consistent. Bringing home a purebred dog means that you generally know the dogs personality based on breed, size, energy level, instinctual abilities (like tracking, pointing, digging, etc.) and if they make good family pets. Of course every individual is different, but you have a sound idea of what you are getting if the breeding has been good. Designer dogs attempt to take the best attributes of two breeds and get a consistent outcome in their puppies that has the best of both parents.

It is argued that this craze for crossbreds began with the Labradoodle, first bred in Australia by crossing the Labrador retriever (intelligent and easily trained) with the Poodle (intelligent and has a nonsheadding coat) to be an allergy friendly guide dog.

Today I am featuring poodle designer dog crosses – dogs that now have doodle in their name. Here are pictures of common poodle crosses:

1. Labradoodle – Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle

2. Goldendoodle – Golden Retriever mixed with Standard Poodle

3. Aussiedoodle – Australian Shepherd and Standard Poodle

4. Airedoodle – Airedale Terrier and Standard Poodle

6. Bordoodle — Border Collie and Poodle
