This year’s games have inspired another set of Guinea Pig Olympics pictures! There are 12, which are featured in a 2013 calander that is available for purchase from Maverick Arts Club. The art is so realistic because real guineas were used as models for the art.

Here is a video compilation put together by Guinea Pigs Today:

I love these images, they make me laugh because I know that my guinea pigs would have nothing to do with these games!

I feel it would be much more like this:

Ice Age: Continental Drift

The newest Ice Age movie, Ice Age Continental Drift is now out in theaters! I went to see it this past weekend and it was good. The short that plays before the movie is far funnier to adults I think. At least, it has a lot of funny jokes that are reading based and you have to be older to catch all the references. If you enjoyed the previous Ice Age movies this one has more of the same humor and character development.

This movie also features new adorable creatures:

While I would love these guys to be guinea pigs, they are actually a mammal called a hyrax.

Hyrax are from the family procaviidae, and can currently only be found in Africa and the Middle East. In the past they were far more widespread. Hyrax have very strange front teeth that tend to be long and pointy, unlike the design of the characters in the movie. They live in small family groups that are led by a male, if a male does not have a group of females then they tend to live alone. It is common to see family groups lying on, or huddling close, to one another because they have a very poor ability to regulate their own temperature.

Lucky the Dog

Lucky the dog, who holds the world record for animal most photographed with different celebrities (more than 300!), is going to have a wedding! While that might sound strange, the event is all for a good reason with charity in mind.

Betty White with Lucky:

Picture from animalfair.com

First, here is some back story: Lucky is a very pampered little white Maltese, who was a rescue, now living a life of luxury in Manhattan. Her owner, Wendy Diamond, founded Animal Fair Media to promote fairness for animals and rescues. Lucky has become somewhat of the company’s spokesdog – getting to meet the stars and have photos with them to share on the company website in an area called “Who Got Lucky?” She has helped to raise money for many different rescue organizations.

Animal Fair’s website explains some further accomplishments for Lucky: ” She’s the Chair Dog of the Katrina Pet Memorial, and also has a wing named after her at the Humane Society of New York, honoring all she does to help animals in need worldwide. Some animal-related organizations that Lucky has aided through charity and media attention include: Delta Society, Humane Society of New York, PACT, Pixie Project, Elephant Nature Park, IFAW and the list goes on!”

What exactly is the wedding all about?

Lucky has been diagnosed with spleen cancer and may only have a few months left to live. Lucky was cancer free after treatment, but the survial rate for this type of cancer is only 5%. Facing this, Wendy decided to find Wendy a “mate” – someone to end up replacing her as animal spokesmen for Animal Fair. Wendy has organized this with lots of flair and publicity – and a couple events to help continue to raise money for her and Lucky’s cause.

This May Lucky had a bridal shower, in which she wore a frilly pink dress and got to lick icing off of cupcakes.

The wedding is scheduled for July 12, and 300  guests were invited. The cost to attend is $200, all proceeds benefit the Human Society of New York. There will be an orchestra, a doggy buffet, and dog ring bearer and flower girl. The groom is, as of yet, unknown. The lucky groom will be chosen by an online competition on the animal fair website where anyone can enter their dog to eventually take Lucky’s place.  Applications can be made on Facebook or at animalfair.com, and the winner will be the one with the most votes. Cats are also allowed to apply. The winner will be announced June 28, 2 weeks before the wedding.

You can read more about the wedding at abc news.

Hamster Conan

Conan O’Brien has been doing a segment called Puppy Conan on his show. On the last night that he featured the segment he also featured Hamster Conan for the first time. Just like with Puppy Conan, the hamsters had their own logo and an even smaller version of the show’s set. They were even wearing tiny wigs.

DOGTV

Does your dog have to spend a lot of time at home alone? What I never thought could exist  now does, a tv channel dedicated to your dog – for your dog called DOGTV. The channel is not for people, it is literally designed for your dog to watch.

Currently DOGTV is only available in San Diego, but a nation wide release is in the works. It is a pay channel, and it will cost about $4.99 a month.

The cable channel is on air 24/7, and is designed to “stimulate, entertain, relax and habituate dogs with shows that expose them to various movements, sounds, objects, experiences and behavior patterns, all from a dog’s point of view.” The company’s website says dogs left alone can develop separation anxiety, boredom, or depression and this is a tool that can help prevent these problems.

Here is a commercial for the product:

The channel’s programming was scientifically developed to capture a dogs attention by a team of people including media professionals, pet experts, and trainers. The content has different segments which can be relaxing or stimulating.  Sounds are designed to be relaxing and at a range safe for dog ears. The channel is meant for all breeds. It is recommended that you watch the channel with your dog the first time just to get them used to it. DOGTV is recognized by the Humane Society of the United States.

Here is a video of the coloration process that programing goes through:

Decision 2012

Animal Planet is having a contest called Decision 2012 to decide what type of pet is America’s favorite. It is being run like a mock political campaign and election.

You can submit pictures  or videos to “nominate” their pet.  Pet categories are Dogs, Cats, and Independent – for all other pets.  You then rate each pet photo or video, and you can comment and “campaign” for a pet with Tweets and Likes.  The contest will have different categories as it progresses. The first categories is cutest, and others include smartest, most talented, most athletic and funniest.

Exactly how Decision 2012 works can be found here. It is kind of hard to explain succinctly given the use of the election format.

Description of the Dog Party: Dignity, security and great hair are just a few things dogs have to offer.

Description of the Cat Party: Cats have gotten a bad rap, and it’s time to set the record straight.

Description of the Independent Party: Don’t let the two party system of Dogs and Cats limit your choice for America’s Favorite Pet.

Puppy Conan

Conan O’Brien unveiled Puppy Conan on his show on Wednesday night in response to the Puppy Bowl.

He had a mini set made up that looks just like his regular set, with puppies dressed up in tiny wigs and a bit of clothing to look like Andy and Conan.

Close up of puppy Conan:

The puppies seemed a bit sad and unappreciative of their attire, so Conan and Andy went to join their puppy counterparts and give them some love. The little chihuahua in front is the puppy show guest, puppy Justin Bieber.
