Save Arturo

Arturo the polar bear currently lives in the Mendoza Zoo in Argentina, and he appears to be rather depressed. So much so that he has been called the world’s saddest animal and his case has received international attention.

The problem appears to be that he is living in an inappropriate climate, in an enclosure with little water, and he recently lost his polar bear companion. Now he is displaying depressed behaviors like laying around, pacing, and rocking from side to side. Activists have been trying to move Arturo to a place better suited to care for him in Canada, the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, where he could be with others of his kind.

So far everything has fallen through and it seems the zoo which has him does not really wish to have him go anywhere else. The Conservancy was willing to make the risky move even with Arturo’s advanced age, but the zoo could not provide the bear’s updated medical records. Arturo’s case has taken on international attention with Facebook pages, a petition on change.org, and a Greenpeace petition that will be given to the Argentinean president.

A more recent report on Arturo from NPR states that the Mendoza Zoo believes he is too old (28 or 29 years old) to be sedated and taken to the facility in Canada. They have cared for him this long, and removing him from his current caretakers could further depress him. A group of vets in Argentina has also reviewed the situation and also determined that Arturo is too old for the move.

It seems that this sad bear will live out his days alone. Whether moving him would be the best for Arturo we can only hope that he is well taken care of for the remainder of his life.

Baby Owl Learning to Fly

So our human says we need to get serious about this whole blog thing, but guinea pigs are not really serious creatures. She keeps feeding us all these topics, but we just want treats. Hopefully we will work this out in the near future and post more often – with treats.

For the moment, have a baby owl trying to fly:

So close but so far! One day those wings will work just right.

And for a bonus, here are a couple more fuzzy baby owls:

Because really, fuzzy owl chicks can make a lot of people smile.

Pokemon Center Site Coming Back!

If you are a Pokemon lover (and the human around here is) you might remember the American Pokemon Center stores. Even the website went away. Why did they go? Our owner laments this, especially when seeing the awesome merchandise you can still buy in Japan from Pokemon Center which then ends up on Ebay for way more than it originally cost.

Fear not!

The Pokemon Center website – pokemoncenter.com – is returning!

smallstore

Fully opening on August 6, each week they are offering three new products which you can order. Only 26 days to go! This week is a Pikachu notebook, a Froakie stuffed toy, and a stuffed Pikachu hat.

This is so exciting! Finally, access to Pokemon merchandise that you either cannot get at all or could only get for exorbitant prices from sellers on the likes of Ebay.

Anyways, our owner is excited so we are passing this along to everyone.

Bunnies Sticking Out Their Tongues

Even guineas agree that bunnies are cute, but what about when they stick out their tongues? As bunnies are larger than guineas, their tongues are larger too. This makes it even more adorable when you see their tongues!

Penguin Ice Cream Bars

Looking for a way to have some fun with your kids? Or if you just love penguins, here is an easy way to make a regular ice cream bar even more fun! Not that ice cream really needs any help…

Penguin Ice Cream Bars from Handmade Charlotte

Penguin-Ice-Cream-Bar-1
(HandmadeCharlotte)

Ingredients:
Chocolate Covered Ice Cream Bars (as many as you would like to make, those with a curved top make a more convincing penguin but any bar would work)
Candy Eyes (two for each bar)
Orange Slice Candy (only a couple should work out for quite few depending on how you cut them)
Oreos – cookie halves removed (each whole oreo makes wings for two bars)
White Candy Melts (one bag should be enough unless you are making a lot)

Instructions:
1. Wait to remove the ice cream bars from your freezer until you have everything prepared.

2. Take the oreos and remove the cream center. Cut each cookie half down the center with a knife to make the wings for your penguin.

3. Make beaks for your penguins by cutting the Orange Slice into triangles with kitchen scissors.

4. Melt 6 ounces of the candy melts in a microwave safe dish, and put into a small piping bag or squeeze bottle.

5. Remove ice cream bars from freezer and remove from individual packaging.

6. Using the candy melt draw a large oval on the front lower portion of the bar to be the penguins tummy.

7. Use the candy melt to attach the wings, eyes and beak by dabbing on the back of each and then pressing lightly onto the bar.

8. Place the bars back into the freezer to set up before serving.

9. Enjoy!

These are super cute, great for parties or just because!

McDonald’s New Mascot

Don’t human children usually like cute mascots? Or maybe at the very least cool mascots? My human showed me McDonald’s new mascot, named Happy, and it is not guinea pig approved! Baby guinea pigs should not be exposed to it. The look in its eyes assures me it is plotting to eat all guinea pigs.

Just look at it!
484136e07

Those teeth are perfect to eat guinea pigs (or human children), those eyes can only be plotting the demise of all life on Earth, the arms and and legs just make no sense because it is a box and should not be allowed mobility. The creature is named Happy when nothing about it makes me or anyone else happy. There is simply nothing redeemable about this. I, and all guineas at FT, think that human children cannot be fooled by this creature.

But what about dogs? I think that this is the only appropriate way to view this new thing:

This Corgi makes it look funny! Go Corgi!

All power to the dogs who can rip these boxes apart and prevent them from carrying out their evil plans…

Wednesday Woof! – Lab

Wednesday! Sorry for the lack of post last week, the human lost track again. She said something about summer being a busy time, but guinea pigs are always busy. There is food to eat, treats to beg for, running, hiding, eating again, and more. How can she be busier than we are?

I hear Labs are wonderful dogs, full of energy:

Ever have this happen when you take your dog to the park, or play fetch? Silly dogs, guinea pigs don’t even bother playing fetch!
