Swimming Owl

Have you ever seen an owl swim? Other birds which are not water birds sometimes do out of necessity, like Eagles when they go after fish, but I have never heard of an owl doing so. A birder and photographer in Chicago captured video of an owl swimming in Lake Michigan after it was forced into the water by two peregrine falcons. There is no footage of the falcons, but the short video of the owl is amazing:

Here is the bird in the water:

And after it got out:

A bird rescue was called but the owl got out and flew off on its own. Smart owl!

Dog on a Treadmill

Have you seen the video of Munchkin, the Shih Tzu, dressed like a teddy bear and walking on a treadmill?

munchkin

Munchkin is kind of a big deal on YouTube, dressed of course in that cute bear costume:

(facebook)

The costume itself is actually a teddy bear which is the right size and fur color for Munchkin with its stuffing removed (except for the arms), face cut off, and the feet removed so the dog wears it on the front half of her body. There is also a little bit of velcro on the bears neck to keep it on and closed up in the back. You could easily do this for your own dog if you so desired, and can find a teddy bear to fit.

The only other things we know about Munchkin are that she is 8 pounds and lives in California. You can follow her on Facebook here or Instagram at munchkintheshihtzu.

Panda in Snow!

Is it snowing where you live? Here there is so much snow, so early, that kids had snow days already!

No matter if you have snow now or not, watch this Panda at the Toronto Zoo enjoying the winter weather:

Intense design! Also the dog looks a little creepy with the extra large Pluto eyes.

And because I couldn’t resist, here are some horses dressed as Mickey:

Dog Rides on Ambulance to Stay With Owner

In San Angelo Texas a dog, named Buddy, rode on the small side step of an ambulance for 20 miles just to stay with his owner. The beagle mix jumped onto the outside of the ambulance as it picked up his owner to take him to the emergency room. The paramedics did not know the dog was there until another driver flagged him down.

By the time Buddy was discovered by the ambulance driver the paramedics had no choice but to load the dog into the back and take him on the remainder of the almost hour long trip. Buddy’s owner, 85 year old JR Nicholson, had adopted the dog four months ago. He called for an ambulance because he felt dizzy and was soon released from the hospital.

It was a good thing that someone saw the little guy so he didn’t ride outside the ambulance for an hour. Such a loyal dog!

Happy Halloween!

Have a happy and safe Halloween! Remember to keep pets safe, not everyone is kind and not everyone feels safe around dogs. Keep costumes fun but not restrictive or dangerous, and don’t put them on any animal that hates them.

Your staff and intern pigs put on some costumes to show off for the occasion.

And I couldn’t resist dressing up the new interns in the same outfits:

They were not so sure about the whole thing. Look at those eyes!

But their hair just makes them irresistible.

These costumes came from Petsmart’s Halloween section. They have Christmas costumes out now if that is your thing!

Police Puppy

Police dogs often face great danger while doing their jobs, and bullet proof vests can help them stay a bit safer.

Take a look at this German Shepherd puppy, named Tuco, from the Boston Police Departments K-9 force wearing his future vest:

He still has a bit of growing to do before it fits him, but he looks so cute!

The vest is from Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog, a nonprofit organization which works to provide dogs to law enforcement along with other essentials like bulletproof vests, other equipment, and training.

Just look how happy Tuco is!

The Loyalty of Dogs

This week saw the unspeakable horror of yet another senseless shooting, this time a terrorist attack at Canada’s National War Memorial on Parliament Hill. Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot and killed. A single father and animal lover, he is dearly missed.

His dogs still faithfully wait at home for a master who will never return:

These pictures are heartbreaking. They capture the sense of loss and grief over this tragedy. Dogs have been called man’s best friend for a reason, their love and loyalty is without bounds. I hope these dogs will be treated well and taken care of now.

Our thoughts and prayers are with this family and Canada,

The photographer went to great lengths to get an amazing shot of these grey herons in Hungary. He used two timing devices for his camera, one to move the focus and one to adjust aperture. It took 74 nights before the conditions were right to get a photograph of both the herons and the stars in the sky.

The winner of the world in our hands category is “The Price They Pay” by Bruno D’Amicis:

Selling fennec foxes is illegal in Tunisa but it is still widespread. In the above photograph a teenager offers this young fenec fox for sale after it was recently dug out of its den in the desert. Issues like this are important to understand when considering the obstacles many endangered species face from humans.

You can see more winners here, and all of the entries at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year website. Below are some more images that I wanted to share from the competition.
